Injectable Dutasteride/Minoxidil

Dutasteride and minoxidil, typically offered as oral and topical preparations, are now also available as intradermal injections for hair restoration. This method delivers the proven benefits of these medications while minimizing systemic side effects. Men and post-menopausal women can use a combination of dutasteride and minoxidil, while pre-menopausal women can use minoxidil alone.

Several studies have explored the effectiveness of intradermal dutasteride in treating androgenetic alopecia in men. These studies utilized concentrations of 0.05% dutasteride, 0.01% dutasteride, and 0.05% dutasteride, with injections administered at intervals ranging from weekly to every three months. Involving over 100 patients, the research revealed that 80-90% of patients experienced improvements in hair density with 0.05% and 0.01% dutasteride concentrations. However, the 0.01% concentration only showed a 30% improvement rate, indicating that this concentration is less clinically effective. Notably, adverse effects were minimal, and serum hormone levels remained unaffected, making this a suitable option for those wishing to avoid systemic side effects.

A randomized, placebo-controlled trial assessed the efficacy of a 0.5% minoxidil solution in treating female pattern hair loss in 50 patients. Injections were administered weekly for 10 weeks, with evaluations conducted six weeks after the last injection. The minoxidil group demonstrated a significant increase in the mean terminal to vellus hair ratio, while the placebo group experienced a decrease. Furthermore, 70% of patients in the minoxidil group reported perceived improvements in hair loss, compared to 37.5% in the placebo group. The only reported side effect was injection site pain. Another study evaluated a 0.05% dutasteride solution in 126 females with female pattern hair loss, finding improvement in 63% of patients.

FAQS

What is the difference between the injectable and oral or topical formulation?

The injectable formulation allows us to deliver the medication more precisely to the hair follicle base, where it can be most effective as delivering results. Topical formulations are generally limited by absorption into the scalp. Oral formulations are quite effective, but sometimes cause other side effects.

Who is a suitable candidate for PRP hair treatment?

Men and post-menopausal women can use a combination of dutasteride and minoxidil as injections, while pre-menopausal women can use minoxidil alone. These treatments can be added onto patients who are already on oral medications as a booster, or can be used in lieu of certain oral medications if a patient has side effects.

How many sessions are needed, and how often?

The number of sessions and the frequency of treatments vary based on individual factors such as the severity of hair loss and the desired results. Typically, 3 sessions spaced at least a month apart are recommended to start, with maintenance sessions every 4-6 months advised to sustain the results over time.

Is this hair treatment painful?

Some patients may experience mild pain or discomfort during the procedure or temporary soreness afterward, but it is generally well-tolerated.

What are the potential side effects of PRP hair treatment?

Side effects are rare but may include mild swelling, redness, or bruising at the injection sites. These typically subside within a few days.

How soon can I expect to see results from PRP hair treatment?

Results can vary among individuals. Some patients may start to notice an improvement in hair quality and thickness within a few months after treatment, while others may require multiple sessions to observe noticeable changes.
