Lichen Planopilaris
Lichen planopilaris (LPP) was first described by Pringle in 1895 as lichen planus associated with scalp lesions. It accounts for 30 to 40% of scarring alopecias. LPP typically affects females (2:1 ratio) and occurs between ages 30 to 70. It can be an insidious process, developing slowly over the years, with a preference for high-density areas like the occipital scalp in men with male pattern baldness. Unlike lupus, follicular hyperkeratosis occurs along the plaques’ periphery. Itchiness and tenderness are common LPP features.
