Hirsutism Hypertrichosis

Hirsutism refers to excessive male-pattern hair growth in women, typically characterized by dark, coarse hair on the upper lip, chin, chest, back, and inner thighs. It may indicate an underlying androgen disorder, particularly when combined with other symptoms of androgen excess, such as acne and female pattern hair loss. Polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) is the most common association, but other disorders can be present as well. A thorough endocrine work-up may be necessary.

Hypertrichosis is an excess of non-androgen-dependent hair. This hair is usually lighter and thinner and may be familial or induced by medications (e.g., minoxidil).
Unwanted hair resulting from hirsutism or hypertrichosis can be addressed with hair removal techniques.
